From Manila to California: Benilde Architects Go Global

28 February 2025

On February 27, 2025, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde and California State Polytechnic University, Pomona formalized a groundbreaking partnership that places Benilde’s architecture program on the global stage. With a shared vision of fostering innovation, sustainability, and cross-cultural exchange, the two institutions are set to redefine the future of architectural education—one that is truly Like No Other.

During the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), key representatives from both institutions solidified their commitment to exploring collaborative programs, faculty and student exchanges, joint research, and sustainable design initiatives. The agreement opens doors for Benildean architecture students to engage with Cal Poly Pomona’s world-class faculty and facilities, while also inviting their counterparts to immerse in the dynamic and culturally rich design landscape of the Philippines.

Benilde Vice Chancellor Angelo Lacson emphasized that this partnership is more than just an academic alliance—it is a bridge that connects Filipino talent with global opportunities. “Architects today must think beyond borders. This collaboration equips our students with the skills, network, and global perspective they need to compete at the highest levels of the industry.

Similarly, Cal Poly Pomona College of Environmental Design Dean Dr. Mary Anne Alabanza Akers expressed her enthusiasm about the synergy between the two institutions. “Both Benilde and Cal Poly Pomona are committed to innovation in architecture, sustainability, and community-centered design. This partnership is a natural fit, and we’re excited about the transformative opportunities it will bring to students and faculty alike.

At the heart of the agreement is a mutual dedication to regenerative architecture, urban heat mitigation, and climate-resilient design. Benilde’s soon-to-rise fabrication lab will play a crucial role in this collaboration, serving as a hub for experimental materials, digital fabrication, and sustainable design solutions. Meanwhile, Cal Poly Pomona’s expertise in agricultural and environmental design will provide a complementary perspective, bridging urban development with ecological conservation.

One of the first major initiatives under this partnership is a study abroad program set for 2026, where Cal Poly Pomona students will spend a semester at Benilde, engaging in workshops, industry visits, and cultural immersions. To ensure a smooth rollout, a preliminary ocular visit is scheduled for July 2025, where representatives will assess facilities, discuss program logistics, and build connections with faculty members.

Beyond architecture, the partnership also extends to heritage preservation, textile innovation, and climate-adaptive design. Cal Poly Pomona’s Ethnic Studies department has shown strong interest in integrating Philippine vernacular architecture and indigenous building practices into its curriculum. This opens doors for joint research projects, field studies, and community-based initiatives that highlight the intersection of culture, history, and sustainability.

On the fashion front, both institutions see exciting potential in cross-disciplinary projects that explore sustainable textiles and climate-adaptive apparel. With Cal Poly Pomona’s fashion program housed under its College of Agriculture, the collaboration could lead to groundbreaking studies in heat-resistant fabrics, natural dyeing techniques, and functional apparel for extreme climates—all while drawing inspiration from Filipino craftsmanship and traditions.

Looking ahead, both institutions are also exploring a large-scale mural workshop in 2027, where students from Benilde and Cal Poly Pomona will co-create a public artwork that captures themes of sustainability, climate resilience, and cultural identity. This initiative aims to engage local communities while using art as a medium for dialogue and awareness.

As Benilde continues to expand its global footprint, this partnership with Cal Poly Pomona stands as a testament to its commitment to providing world-class education that is bold, innovative, and Like No Other. The future of architecture is global—and Benildeans are ready to lead the way.
