Forging Global Connections with a UK University through a Groundbreaking Partnership

21 January 2025

Forging a path toward global collaboration, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde recently entered into a transformative partnership with St. Mary’s University, Twickenham, London. This landmark collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed on January 20 at The Atrium@Benilde Campus, signifies a bold step in enriching educational opportunities for students and faculty from both institutions.

“This isn’t just a formality,” said Mr. Angelo Lacson, Vice Chancellor for Academics at Benilde. “It’s a bold step toward fostering collaboration, inspiring innovation, and building bridges that inspire and empower at the same time.”

Representing St. Mary’s University, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Enterprise and Chief Financial Officer Mr. Richard Solomon expressed his optimism, saying, “It’s an honor and a privilege for us to be able to start what I think will be the beginning of a very successful and interesting journey together.” Solomon noted the unique standing of St. Mary’s as one of only four Catholic universities in Great Britain, emphasizing the shared values that make this partnership a natural fit.

Founded in 1850, St. Mary’s University has a rich history rooted in providing education to underserved communities. “When the Roman Catholic Church was re-legalized in Britain, its first priority was education, leading to the establishment of St. Mary’s,” Solomon shared during the event. Today, the institution offers a wide range of programs, from teacher education to sports science, and its traditions of faith and learning continue to guide its mission.

Similarly, Benilde has been at the forefront of innovation and inclusivity in the Philippines, with programs spanning arts, design, management, and service industries. Its learner-centered and globally oriented approach complements St. Mary’s educational philosophy. As Solomon highlighted, “The fact that your university has values embodied by the prayer you shared earlier makes it very clear to me that we are sister organizations.”

The MOU sets the stage for diverse collaborative efforts, including joint research, faculty and student exchange programs, and cultural immersion initiatives. Both institutions also intend to explore dual-degree programs and micro-credentialing opportunities. As Solomon remarked, “I’m confident there’s much we can learn from your institution, and we are eager to embrace those opportunities. At the same time, we’re equally committed to sharing our strengths and contributing in ways that will benefit both of us.”

The event also showcased the mutual respect and shared aspirations of both institutions. Solomon presented Benilde with commemorative publications, including Windows of the Soul, a meditative work by Bishop Richard Moth of the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton, reflecting St. Mary’s deep commitment to integrating faith and education.

With this partnership, Benilde and St. Mary’s University are not only bridging continents but also building a future where education transcends borders, fostering a global community of learners and leaders. As Lacson concluded, “Together, let us continue to champion the transformative power of education.”

This partnership shows how both institutions are dedicated to providing real opportunities that help students and faculty thrive in today’s global world. It’s a chance to push the boundaries of academic growth and innovation, opening doors to new possibilities for everyone involved.
